How To Draw A Cursive Y

A cursive capital Y is easy to write. It's almost exactly like a handwritten lowercase y, just larger. The lowercase cursive y however, is almost exactly like a lowercase handwritten y.

The letter y in cursive usually connects to the letter e in words like:

Cursive y also connects to the letter o in many words. Some of these include:

After you become comfortable with writing the letter y in cursive, practice writing "ye" together as well as "yo." These are called "connectors" and will help you understand how cursive works to form words.

Writing an Uppercase y in Cursive

As you see in the diagram (above), begin the capital Y slightly below the topline, on the left, creating an upside down hook-like shape. Continue your stroke down and to the bottom line. From the bottom line, make a "u" shape back up to the topline. Finally from the topline, take your stroke down and below the bottom line. When your stroke is below the bottom line, make a quick loop out to the right to either end the letter or connect to your next letter.

Writing a Lowercase y in Cursive

Begin your stroke slightly below your midline, creating an upside down hook-like shape. Next, bring your stroke to the bottom line and from there make a "u"-like shape back to up to the midline. Finally, take your stroke down and below the bottomline and quickly make a stem with a loop. Finish your stroke by bringing it back above the bottom line and leave a tail out to the right to either end the letter or connect to your next letter.
